Riverside police as of 4:05 p.m. on Friday afternoon reopened East Burlington Street between Harlem Avenue and North Delaplaine Road in Riverside to traffic after crews had stopped a high-pressure gas line leak.
According to Riverside Fire Chief Spencer Kimura, a contractor excavating a driveway in the 300 block of East Burlington Street struck a gas supply main at about 1:20 p.m.
As of 2:45 p.m., the gas was still spewing from the line and two buildings on the south side of East Burlington Street have been evacuated as a precaution. In addition, said Kimura, two people were transported to MacNeal Hospital for observation after complaining of not feeling well.
Crews from Nicor are on the scene and are attempting to cap the break. Kimura said there is no time frame for when the leak might be secured. It could be up to another couple of hours.
In the meantime, officials are instructing motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.
