While some couples and friends wish to enjoy Valentine’s Day alone, many seniors in Brookfield look forward every year to celebrating the holiday together in fellowship.
On Sunday, Feb. 15, the village of Brookfield will be teaming up with the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce and the Aging Well Team in hosting its annual Valentine’s Day Senior Social.
The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the recreation hall in the basement of the Brookfield Village Hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave., and is sure to be an afternoon filled with music, snacks, raffles and camaraderie.
Team Cathy Colgrass Edwards, Brookfield’s village clerk and chairwoman of the Aging Well Team, says that the event, which has an expected turnout of more than 100 local seniors, is a great way for older residents to get out for the holiday and enjoy the company of fun neighbors.
“[The social] started with about 75 [attendees], and it just keeps growing every year,” Colgrass-Edwards said. “It’s definitely a lot of fun, there’s no doubt about it.”
Edwards says Brookfield decided to create the event several years ago in order to cater to the village’s large senior population.
“The village wants to be receptive to holding events for older adults so [the recreation hall] is a good place to have it,” she said. “There’s a lot of room and it’s comfortable for them.”
This year, guests will have the opportunity to socialize with one another while enjoying a light lunch catered by Rose’s Catering and listening to singing entertainment by Brookfield business owner and children’s music teacher Clara D’Onofrio.
Raffle items expected at this year’s social include Chicago Cubs game tickets, goods from Betty’s Flowers & Gifts and other goody bags with donated restaurant tickets and items from businesses within the Chamber of Commerce.
