There is an opening on the Brookfield Library Board of Trustees.

Last week, library board member Judith Sweet resigned for health reasons. Sweet had been a member of the library board for 10 years.

Sweet, a clinical psychologist, lost the use of her limbs after being involved in a car accident as a teenager and has had a difficult time participating in board meetings during the last year because of health complications related to her paralysis.

During her decade on the library board, Sweet sometimes came to meetings but more often participated by telephone. Her participation had dropped noticeably in the last year or so. Sweet last participated in a library board meeting in November, according to publicly posted minutes of library board meetings.

While on the library board, Sweet was the chairwoman of the board’s policy committee and served on the buildings and grounds committee and marketing committee.  She was known for her incisive intelligence and strong opinions.

Sweet resigned after library board president Jennifer Perry and library Director Kimberly Coughran visited Sweet at her home last week.

Both Perry and Coughran said that they were sad that Sweet had to leave the board.

“I deeply appreciate her many years of service and dedication to the library,” Perry said. “Her contributions are innumerable and I have enjoyed working with her and I hope that she will continue to be involved in different ways, even though she’s not serving board.”

Coughran said Sweet’s presence on the library board will be missed.

“She’s a wonderful person,” Coughran said. “I wish her health was better, and we’re going to miss her very much.”

Sweet did not respond to telephone messages left on her cell phone asking for comment.

With a referendum coming up in the near future, library leaders thought it was important to have library board members actively participating in the library’s business.

The library board hopes to appoint someone to serve the remaining two years left on Sweet’s term in office next month.

Any Brookfield resident interested in serving on the library board should submit a resume and a letter of interest that includes a vision for the library to Perry at the Brookfield Public Library, 3609 Grand Blvd., Brookfield, Illinois, 60513 or send the letter and resume to

Library board members serve without pay.
