Riverside Parks and Recreation will hosts is 2nd Annual Fishing Derby on Sunday, June 3 from 3 to 6 p.m.

The derby is open to kids ages 3 to 12 and will take place along the Des Plaines River in Swan Pond Park. All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and kids will be divided into three age groups: 3-5, 6-9 and 10-12.

Parents can assist kids in the 3-5 group. All others must be able to cast, hook and catch their own fish. Parents may assist all kids in baiting hooks and taking fish off hooks. The event is catch-and-release. Participants must provide their own gear. 

Volunteers will help record fish catches and awards will be given within age groups as well as a grand prize.

All participants must register online prior to June 3 at Check-in starts at 2 p.m. on the day of the event.

‘Rocket Men’ author event

Brookfield Public Library will cap its Brookfield Reads! program with an event featuring a discussion and Q&A with Robert Kurson, author of this year’s Brookfield Reads! selection, “Rocket Men,” which tells the story of Apollo 8, the first manned journey to the moon.

The event will take place on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Discovery Center at Brookfield Zoo, 3300 Golf Road in Brookfield. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow the discussion. NASA moon and meteorite samples will be present at the event.

It’s a carnival!

The LaGrange Business Association kicks off summer with its LaGrange Carnival in downtown LaGrange on June 1-3. The all-ages carnival features rides with LED light displays, family favorites like bumper cars and a Ferris wheel, games of chance, kiddie rides and concessions.

The carnival will be held on West Harris Avenue, between LaGrange Road and Ashland Avenue. Beer and food from local establishments will also be available for purchase. Live music entertainment all three days on the main stage.

Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. on June 1; noon to 10 p.m. on June 2; and noon to 9 a.m. on June 3. Unlimited ride specials on June 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. ($30); on June 2 from noon to 4 p.m. ($25) and 5 to 9 p.m. ($30); and on June 3 from noon to 4 p.m. ($25) and 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. ($30).

A highlight of the weekend is the LaGrange Pet Parade at 9:30 a.m. on June, stepping off from LaGrange Road and Cossitt Avenue.

Monarch mania

Kim Savino of Start Seeing Monarchs hosts a hands-on presentation to help you understand and recognize the monarch butterfly is all stages of development on Wednesday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room of the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road.

Calling all beauty school dropouts

North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Desplaines Ave., continues its Wednesday Movie Matinee series with the 1978 classic musical “Grease,” starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta on June 6 at 2 p.m.

  Friends of the Chicago Portage will host a walking tour of the Chicago Portage National Historic Site, 4800 S. Harlem Ave. (two blocks north of I-55) on June 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Guide Jeff Carter will explore the birth story of Chicago from geological beginnings to the present day. Wear long pants and walking shoes or boots. Rain or shine. Free and open to the public.

Quincy St., presents “Women Painting Men,” featuring the work of six artists in the Freeark Gallery, while “Golden Rule,” featuring the work on Amy Babinec, will be in the FlexSpace gallery. Both exhibitions run through June 23. Mara Baker’s show “A Mountain One Fence High – A Ribbon Two Yards Wide” is in the outdoor Sculpture Garden through July. Admission is free.
