The Lyons Township High School boys gymnastics teams placed fourth with a score of 156.05 at the state finals, hosted by Hoffman Estates on Saturday, May 11. Libertyville won the state title with a score of 159.15, followed by Niles West (158.65) and Glenbrook North (157.70).

Senior Julian Campbell finished second in rings (9.4) and senior Matthew O’Malley also earned a runner-up showing in vault (9.5) for LTHS. Campbell also tied for seventh in parallel bars with Neuqua Valley’s Michael Baren as both  scored a 9.3.

Other notable results for the Lions included senior John Quinlan tying for fourth in floor (9.5) with three other gymnasts and sophomore Ben Taylor notching 10th place in parallel bars with a score of 8.6.

In the all-around standings, LTHS freshman Alec Paras and Metea Valley freshman Zachary Taylor both scored 52.00 to tie for 15th place.

LTHS boys water polo

Bobby Bolan scored four goals and Victor Perez three to power the sectional host Lions past St. Rita 10-8 in the final. Marty Brown added a pair of goals and goalie Ray Berg had 15 saves for LTHS.

In earlier rounds, the Lions cruised to victories over Curie (17-5 in the semifinals) and Julian (17-4 in the quarterfinals). Against Julian, Ethan Wright, Perez and Brown each scored twice and Mitchell McNichols played well in the cage with 11 saves.

In other games at the sectional, Riverside-Brookfield defeated Argo 11-4 in its opener but lost to top-seeded St. Rita 23-10 in the semifinals.

Fenwick girls water polo

Paulina Correa and Kassy Rodriguez scored six and three goals, respectively, as the sectional host Friars beat York 15-4 in the championship game. Demi Ovalle (2 goals) and Sam Rodriguez (9 saves) also played well for the victors.

Correa scored seven goals in 17-11 win over Morton in the semifinals. Morton edged RBHS 9-7 in the previous round. Fenwick opened the postseason by routing Kennedy 11-1.

Led by Novalee Roberto ad Hanna Good, the host Lions outscored Solorio and Kelly by a combined scored of 36-10 in the first two rounds of the sectional. Roberto led the way with 10 goals and Good had seven goals and eight assists.

However, Mother McAuley halted the Lions’ momentum quickly in the championship game as Becky Schofield (4 goals) powered the Mighty Macs to a 14-2 win. Roberto and Good each scored a goal and goalie Grace Wantuck finished with 14 blocks.

The Lions won their own sectional with a score of 158. Sophomores Claire Williams and Mary Grace Lansing placed first and second in the 800-meter run, respectively, with times of 2 minutes, 23.69 seconds and 2 minutes, 25.50 seconds. Senior Marta Kogucki won the 1,600 at INSERT time.

In six other events, LTHS qualified for state with runner-up results. The second-place finishers included: London White (300 hurdles: 47.32; 110 hurdles: 15.69), Sarah Barcelona (3,200: 11:44.61), Natalie Swinehart (200: 26.62), Olivia Kalata (pole vault: 9 feet, 9 inches) and Josie Medema (high jump: 4-11),

The Lions also dominated the relay races, winning all four events. The times were 9:29.86 (3,200), 4:01.51 (1,600), 1:44.89 (800) and 49.09 (400).

Nazareth baseball

Nazareth typically establishes an early lead in winning games. The formula has worked well for the Roadrunners, who are 23-5 this season.

However, Nazareth showed against Marian Catholic it can come back to win when needed. Trailing the Spartans 10-2 after five innings, Nazareth scored four runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh to pull off a rousing 11-10 victory.

Cole Vercelli, Zach Carmignani, Troy Siranoivic, Nate Smith and Teddy Olander had two hits apiece, while pinch hitter Luke Dolan slugged a timely double as well. Reliever Archer Wagner earned the victory.

Nazareth hosts Riverside-Brookfield on Thursday, May 16 at 4:30 p.m. and Buffalo Grove on Saturday, May 18 at 10:00 a.m.

LTHS badminton

Katie Materick won three of five matches to lead the Lions to a four-way tie with Waubonsie Valley, Lake Forest and New Trier for 12th at the state finals, hosted by Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Materick recorded wins against Wheeling’s Maya Przebirowski 21-14, 23-21, York’s Aleksina Jovic 21-15, 21-10 and Buffalo Grove’s Claire McLoone 21-8, 21-17.

In doubles, Elizabeth Cremins/Jaden Ownby and Mariah Carli/Adela Garcia both went 1-2 at state.

Nazareth boys tennis

Michael Rooney won the No. 1 singles championship in leading the Roadrunners to a second-place finish at the East Suburban Catholic Conference Championships.
