Scores of bicyclists strapped on their helmets, donned custom T-shirts donated by Art-Flo Screenprinting and Embroidery and rode through LaGrange and Brookfield, stopping off at five establishments to “refuel” during the Bike ‘R’ Bar charity fundraiser on June 6, organized by Tom Moore, Roger Baran and Anthony and Amy Senese.

After meeting up in LaGrange Park, the peloton made its way to Brookfield where they stopped at Off Broadway Pub, 9048 Monroe Ave.; Joe’s Saloon, 9220 47th St.; Ryan’s Public House, 8942 Ogden Ave.; and Phil’s Sports Bar& Grill, 8901 Burlington Ave. They also made a stop at Barrel House, 100 W. Burlington Ave. in LaGrange.

The event raised $6,850 with the money going to benefit St. Barbara Food Pantry.

Music to their ears

A.J. Morrissey, a percussionist from Brookfield, and Olivia Moyer, a cellist from North Riverside, were among six high school seniors awarded $9,000 scholarships from the MacDowell Artists’ Association to continue their music studies in college.

Students performed two selections in a virtual competition. The MacDowell Artists’ Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging young musicians’ education and providing programs to its members.

On campus

Among those awarded degrees from Elmhurst University during commencement ceremonies in May was Brookfield residents Laura Furmanski (B.A, business), Brittany Whigam (B.A. in communications summa cum laude), Emily Hanna (B.A in elementary education summa cum laude), Gina Pardun (B.S. in accounting), Jessica Deibert Lopez (B.S. in business cum laude), Elizabeth Ozuna (B.S. in business administration) and Kevin Engstrom (B.S. in computer game technology and computer science); North Riverside residents Madeline Ackerman (B.A. in elementary education magna cum laude), Gabrielle Mandel (B.S. in management summa cum laude) and Cesar Ramirez (Master of Project Management); and Riverside residents Thomas Kelliher (Bachelor of Music in jazz studies) and Alexandra Burke (Master of Business Administration).

Angelica Melone, of Riverside, graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience.

Riverside residents Anna Milleker B.S. in nursing) and Cooper Lesniak (B.A. in English and creative writing), Brookfield resident Marissa Cruz (B.A. in elementary education) and North Riverside resident Manuel Sida (B.S. in chemical engineering) all graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City at the conclusion of the 2021 spring semester.

Elizabeth Strzelczyk, of Brookfield, graduated magna cum laude in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in software engineering from Iowa State University in Ames. She was also named to the spring semester dean’s list.

Riverside resident Julia Keller graduated cum laude in May with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She was also named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at the school.

George McManus, of Riverside, was among the more than 1,400 students receiving degrees from the University of Charleston (South Carolina) this spring. McManus earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance.

Michael Gruber, of Riverside, earned a bachelor’s degree in design engineering technology from Trine University in Angola, Indiana, at the end of the 2021 spring semester. Gruber also was named to the school’s 2021 spring semester dean’s list.

Brookfield resident Amber Bittourna received a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce and business administration from the University of Alabama during commencement ceremonies this spring. Bittourna was also named to the spring semester dean’s list.

Gloria Corona, of Brookfield, graduated in May from the University of Findlay (Ohio) magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Corona also was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list.

Among those awarded degrees during a May commencement ceremony at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee were Brookfield resident Jack Cavanaugh (B.S. in education) and Riverside resident George Connelly (B.S. in education).

Jocelyn Navarro, of Riverside, was recognized by the Office of Student Affairs at Bradley University in Peoria by awarding the advertising and public relations major the Olive B. White Scholarship.

Kara Hernandez, of Brookfield, was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at Missouri State University for earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale.

Ryan Gaynor, of Riverside, was named to the 2021 winter term dean’s list at Alma College in Alma, Michigan, for achieving a term GPA of at least 3.5.

Marquette University in Milwaukee named Brookfield residents Jordan Gatsos, Elina Kunickas, Calista Lopez and Megan Riordan; North Riverside resident Teresa Godinez; and Riverside residents Maya Diaz, Haley Legan and Maggie Lyons to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list in their respective colleges.

Concordia University in River Forest announced that Brookfield residents McKenna Doyle, Jacob Garvey, Joy Greco, Jacob Lams, Matthew Lams, Spencer Olson and Margaret Roman and North Riverside residents Alexander Bogdan, Natalie Jensen, Marie Labellarte and Michael Labellarte were named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list for earning a GPA of least 3.62 for the semester.

Brookfield residents Ana Arenas and Ariel Sanchez and Riverside residents Jacqueline Miller and Heidi Wolfer were named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Julianne Gannon, of Brookfield, was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at Ohio University in Athens for earning a semester GPA of at least 3.5.

Riverside resident Carole Twomey was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at St, Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, for attaining a GPA of at least 3.6.

Named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Iowa in Iowa City were Riverside residents Lizbeth Casillas, Anna Milleker, Isabella Mullins and Gabriella Nolan and Brookfield residents Katelyn Malikowski and Lauren Paisker for attaining semester GPAs of at least 3.5.

Camryn Hamilton, of Brookfield, a sociology major with minors in psychology and criminal justice, was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at Ripon (Wisconsin) College for achieving a semester GPA of at least 3.4.

Brookfield residents Samantha Hauser and Justin Spaargaren and North Riverside residents Mary Kober and Daisy Murillo were named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s lists in their respective colleges at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. 

Named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at Iowa State University in Ames for earning semester GPAs of at least 3.5 were Brookfield resident Sydney Lindenberg (civil engineering) and Isabelle Legan (global resource systems).

Louie Marcou, of Riverside, was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for receiving a semester GPA of at least 3.4.

Michael Pitts, of Riverside, was named to the dean’s honor list at Cedarville (Ohio) University for the 2021 spring semester for obtaining a GPA of at least 3.5.

McKenna Kunish, of Riverside, was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at the Teacher’s College at Arizona State University.

Danielle Morgan, of Brookfield, was named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, for earning a GPA of at least 3.5.

Brookfield resident Sophie DiForti was named to the chancellor’s honor roll at the University of Mississippi in Oxford for earning a GPA of at least 3.75.

Michael Pilewski, of Riverside, was named to the 2021 sing semester dean’s list at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, for earning a semester GPA of at least 3.5.

Brookfield resident Jeremy Kolasa and North Riverside resident Kailyn Ngo were named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais for attaining a semester GPA of at least 3.5.

Among those named to the 2021 spring semester dean’s list for attaining a GPA of at least 3.5 at Lewis University in Romeoville were Brookfield residents Lina Alamayreh, Margarita Correa-Martinez, Vincenzo DiMaggio, Justin Lohmeier and Jane McLaren and North Riverside resident Danny Zontos.

Brookfield-LaGrange Park School District 95 in May announced the winners of its annual School Citizen of the Year “SCOTY” Award, given annually by the West 40 Intermediate Educational Service Center to recognize “students who have been chosen by their schools as good citizens and models for others to emulate.” 

Due to last year’s pandemic, the schoolboard recognized the SCOTY winners for both 2020 and 2021. The Brook Park School SCOTY winners in 2020 were Max Rosenberg and Madison Trendel, while the S.E. Gross Middle School winners was Morgan Anderson. For 2021, the Brook Park awardees were Evelyn Cunningham and Aria Ramos, while the S.E. Gross awardee was Kaitlyn Cline.
