The Lyons Township High School softball team is off to a 2-0 start, beating Argo 16-1 in four innings in the March 16 opener and Reavis 16-1 in four innings on March 22.

Ava Paganis (4 for 4, 3 RBIs, 3 runs) had three doubles and Sarah Karlson (3 for 3, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) and Emily Joseph (2 for 3, 3 runs) each homered to lead a 17-hit attack against Reavis. 

Lillian Prendergast (2 doubles) and Kaitlyn Filkins also had two hits. Makenna Kotor and Analie Tumminaro also doubled. Winning pitcher Lily Hanafin (3 innings) and Isabella Evans combined on a one-hitter.

Against Argo, Peyton O’Flaherty was 3 for 3 and Joseph also homered while going 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs. Tumminaro (2 RBIs) and Kotor (triple) also contributed. Hanafin (5 strikeouts) and Tumminaro each pitched two innings. 

Morton edges RBHS in extra innings

The Bulldogs (2-1) lost at Morton 2-1 in eight innings March 25 after scoring in the top of the first inning.

Senior Owen Murphy struck out 15 in five innings pitched. Luke Yachnin had three of R-B’s eight hits.

On March 21, winning pitcher Murphy and seniors Jax Giampietro and Max Didio combined on a four-inning no-hitter as the Bulldogs defeated Noble Street College Prep 36-0.

Murphy (5 strikeouts in 2 innings), Giampietro (3 strikeouts in 1 inning) and Didio (2 strikeouts in 1 inning). Offensive leaders were Murphy (4 RBIs), Connor Chapulis (3 RBIs), Jacob Cruz (3 RBIs) and Charlie Wolfer, Yachnin and Rex Dockendorf (2 hits apiece).

LTHS baseball easy winners in opener

The Lions won their five-inning season opener 11-2 over Neuqua Valley on March 21 behind five-run third and fourth innings.

Jack Falls (2 RBIs, double) and Jack McNamara (triple) each were 2 for 3 and Troy Stukenberg and Conner Ohlson had two RBIs each. Winning pitcher Luke Stockbridge (3 innings) and Brady Chambers allowed five hits and each struck out two.

Lions girls, boys water polo tourney winners

The Lyons Township girls water polo team won its home tournament on March 26 with a 15-5 victory over Lincoln-Way East in the title match. In pool play, the Lions (10-1) also defeated Fenwick 18-3 and Lincoln-Way Central 14-3.

The LTHS boys (11-1) used their second one-goal victory March 26 to win the York Invitational by edging the host Dukes 8-7. The Lions also edged New Trier 10-9 and beat St. Ignatius 18-7 and Pioneer 13-7 in the tourney.

In beating New Trier, LTHS avenged its 12-6 pool play loss to the Trevians at the Fenwick Tournament earlier in the month. In already the second rematch of last year’s state final this season, the Lions again defeated defending state champion Stevenson, this time 9-6 for third place at Fenwick.

The Riverside-Brookfield High School girls (3-7) lost to Hinsdale Central 11-10 in the third-place match of their home invitational March 19. In pool play, the Bulldogs beat Stagg 10-2 and lost to eventual champion Maine West 15-9.

The RBHS boys (5-6) beat Maine West 10-2 at the Glenbrook South Tournament March 18-19 and lost to Jones-Payton 10-6, Maine South 13-1 and the host Spartans 14-4.
