Cruise Nights are back

Riverside Garage’s annual Cruise Nights will return to downtown Riverside this summer on June 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. along the first block of East Burlington Street.

Classic car owners who would like to show off their wheels do not need to sign up and will be admitted on a first come, first served basis. No awards will be given out. There will be live music and vendors, and there’s no admission fee to come and enjoy the car show.

Summer concerts in Brookfield, Riverside

Ring of Music

The Parks & Rec Departments of both Brookfield and Riverside kick off their summer concert series on June 17.

If your tastes run more toward classic funk with a side of jazz, head to Big Ball Park, at Longcommon and Delaplaine roads in Riverside, and catch the MyTyme Jazzy ZSoul Funk Band. The park opens at 6:30 p.m., with music starting at 7 p.m.

If you’re a fan of current Top 40 hits, swing by the band shell in Kiwanis Park, at Arden and Brookfield avenues in Brookfield, to see Ring of Music at 7 p.m. Don’t forget your chairs, blankets and picnic items.

Movie in the park

Enjoy a night under stars watching a film with your family during Movies in the Park, which kicks off June 18 in Ehlert Park, 4338 Elm Ave. in Brookfield.

Bring blankets, chairs, food and drinks and watch the original “Jurassic Park.” Prior to the screening, from 7 to 8 p.m., meet Frankie the Dinosaur, who is part animatronic and part puppet. At 7 feet tall and 12 feet long, he’s quite the sight. The movie starts at dusk.

Riverside Fishing Derby

Kids ages 5-12 are invited to grab their fishing poles and bait and head down to the riverbank south of Burling Road along Swan Pond Park for the Riverside Parks & Rec Fishing Derby, set for June 18 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Kids will be grouped into 5-8 and 9-12 age groups and must have a valid fishing license. Volunteers and parents can assist in baiting and taking fish off the hooks. Face masks required throughout the event.

Join Clarence Goodman as he presents “An Unfinished Journey: African American Music in its Pivotal Decades” in Meeting Room 1 at the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library, 3541 Park Ave., on June 22 at 6 p.m.

Four hundred years of slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement and beyond forged it, but when and where did the collective African American voice truly begin to resound?
