The Riverside-Brookfield High School boys soccer program celebrated its seniors Oct. 4. The next night, the seniors couldn’t stop celebrating.

When the Bulldogs defeated visiting Timothy Christian 4-0 on Oct. 5, they earned a share of the Metro Suburban Conference Blue title with Wheaton Academy – their first conference championship since 2015.

Hunter Ferguson

“The drought’s over. We brought it to an end,” RBHS senior forward Hunter Ferguson said. “It felt really good to win it for us [seniors]. RB soccer hasn’t won something in a while, so it feels good to win one.”

Ferguson had yet another hat trick, helping the Bulldogs (11-8, 5-1 in MSC Blue) to a 1-0 halftime lead, and Massimo Franceschina also scored. Diego Villegas had two assists and Tomas Kunickas and Josef Guerrero one apiece.

“It was like a big celebration afterwards [on the field with our fans]. It was great,” said Franceschina, a junior defender. “Compared to the last few years, we have more fans than usual. We like to advertise the games a lot.”

With a 4-0 victory on Oct. 8 over University High, the Bulldogs have won five straight and eight of their last 10 after a 1-5 start.

“They know that the season [end] is almost around the corner. That’s one of the things that’s hyping them up and overall we’re riding a great wave,” RBHS coach Carlos Hernandez said. “When you’re riding that wave, continue riding it.”

The Timothy Christian match had been rescheduled from Sept. 20 due to lightning on that date.

“Winning conference is a great feeling, and I’m glad that we could do it with this team that I love,” said RBHS junior Max Swicionis. “We’re a family and really it was extra special to help my seniors get a good senior year.”

Aidan Hernandez

Perhaps most impressive was handing Timothy Christian its fourth shutout loss.

“Especially when you go into a conference final and you don’t give up a single goal and your defense is on point, it feels like you’re really coming together,” RBHS senior goalie Aidan Hernandez said.

Ferguson now has 27 goals, including four hat tricks, and 12 assists.

“My teammates. It’s all them,” Ferguson said. “Manny [Tovar], Diego [Villegas], they’re brilliant in the middle. They find me and I’m just putting them in the net, so they make my job easy.”

Against University High, Kunickas had a goal and Tovar had two assists. Aidan Hernandez and goalie Nick Gilberto shared their third shutout.

Scoring in the 7-0 Senior Night victory over Bishop McNamara on Oct. 4 were Ferguson (4 goals, assist), Tovar (goal, 2 assists), Villegas (goal, assist), Swicionis (2 assists), Dante Moscosa (goal) and Eric Ruiz (assist).

The Bulldogs are the No. 9 seed in the IHSA Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional. They open Argo Regional play Oct. 18 against No. 8 Argo with the winner likely playing top-seeded Lyons Township (12-4-3) in the Oct. 21 regional final. Minus two starters, LTHS beat RBHS 2-1 on Sept. 26.
