Besides making nine straight IHSA playoffs, the Nazareth Academy football team has won every first-round matchup. The Roadrunners continued that stretch as a 5-4 qualifier by winning 48-22 at Glenbard South on Oct. 28.

Nazareth (6-4), the No. 11 seed in its half of the Class 5A bracket, returns home to play No. 3 Rockford-Boylan (9-1) at 1 p.m. on Nov. 5.

The Roadrunners amassed 434 yards in winning their fourth game in a row after the No. 6 Raiders (7-3) scored first.

Nazareth scored two touchdowns in the first and second quarters for a 28-6 halftime lead and then had a three-touchdown, 20-point third quarter to lead 48-6.

Scoring two touchdown runs were Logan Malachuk (12 and 55 yards), Eddie McClain (18 and 17 yards) and Justin Taylor (41 and 30 yards). Leading rusher Alexander Angulo (15 carries, 111 yards) had Nazareth’s final score on a 19-yard run. Malachuk was 9 for 17 passing for 98 yards. 

Leading tacklers were Gabe Kaminski (7 tackles, 5 for loss), Brady Gorman (7 tackles) and Lesroy Tittle (4 tackles, sack, 3 for loss).

Boylan, the Northern Illinois Conference 10 champions, beat Hillcrest 31-0 after scoring at least 33 points in all regular-season victories, including three over playoff teams with six or seven victories. The Titans’ only loss was 31-28 to Class 6A Belvidere North (7-3) in Week 3.

Nazareth girls volleyball

The Nazareth Academy girls volleyball team advanced to the IHSA Class 3A Little Village Sectional final by rallying past No. 4 St. Ignatius 21-25, 25-23, 25-14 in the sectional semifinals on Oct. 31.

The top-seeded Roadrunners (19-16) play for the sectional title at 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 against No. 2 Fenwick (17-19).

The Trinity Supersectional is at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 with a downstate berth on the line. Nazareth won last year’s state title after taking third in 2019.

The Roadrunners captured their fourth consecutive regional title by beating No. 8 Noble/Bulls Academy 25-9, 25-8 on Oct. 27 after topping No. 17 Schurz 25-5, 25-13 in the Oct. 25 regional semifinals.

Nazareth cross country

The Nazareth girls cross country team qualified for its third straight IHSA Class 2A state meet after finishing seventh at the Kaneland Sectional on Oct. 29.

The Roadrunners (177 points) earned the last team-qualifying berth by 51 points over eighth-place Riverside-Brookfield High School.

Senior Colette Kinsella (3rd, 17:50.62) earned top-10, all-sectional honors, followed by juniors Jane McNamara (24th, 19:10.41) and Hannah McCarthy (47th, 20:00.47), senior Sarah Owen (48th, 20:01.96), sophomore Alana Plahm (62nd, 20:16.94) and juniors Samantha Rozmus (80th, 20:49.36) and Neeve Olson (100th, 21:14.85).

Kinsella has been an all-state 13th in her two IHSA state meets and all-sectional all four years, including an individual title in 2019.

The Nazareth boys were 18th (523) with their finishers senior John Mowrer (101st, 17:23.92), freshman Daniel Lewis (107th, 17:34.40), junior Hagan Perfect (113th, 17:46.55), freshman Drew Hyland (125th, 18:26.80), seniors Patrick Titzer (128th, 18:44.74) and Demario Angarita (135th, 19:23.94) and sophomore Liam Smith (138th, 19:29.39).
