Dawn Aubert, the president of the Lyons Township High School District 204 Board of Education, has resigned from the school board because she is moving out of state.

LTHS made the announcement April 2 in a news release, the same day that Aubert submitted her letter of resignation.

Aubert, who could not be immediately reached for comment, is the second member of the LTHS school to move out of state in the last 12 months. Last year, Julie Swinehart resigned from the board because she moved to Boston for a new job. Swinehart and Aubert were the two leading vote getters in the 2021 school board election in a field of six candidates.

Board vice-president Jill Grech is stepping up to the position of board president. The school board will appoint someone to serve out one year remaining on Aubert’s term in office, which runs through April 2025.

Those interested in in applying for the appointment to the Board of Education may download a candidate application packet off the LT website or may pick up a packet from Clerk Marilyn Zydlo in the superintendent’s office at North Campus Room 105, 100 S. Brainard Ave., LaGrange.

Residents interested in applying for the vacant position must be at least 18, have lived in the district for at least one year and be registered to vote. Applications must be received by the clerk no later than 3 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2024. For additional information, contact Clerk Marilyn Zydlo at 708-579-6451 or by email at mzydlo@lths.net.

Aubert was elected to the LTHS school board in 2021 and became board president last year. As board president, she has led a more collaborative approach in deciding what to do with the vacant land the school owns and may sell in Willow Springs.

Before being elected to the LTHS school board in 2021, Aubert served two terms on the LaGrange District 102 school board from 2007 until 2015. As a board member, Aubert was not hesitant to ask tough questions or voice her opinions.

“Dawn has been a dedicated and student-centered Board member since her election in 2021,” said Grech in a statement included in the news release. “Along with the rest of her fellow board members, she has been instrumental in making important decisions to benefit our entire LT community. It has been a privilege to serve with her, and she will be missed. On behalf of the entire Board and District, we wish her and her family well as they pursue new opportunities.”

Supt. Brian Waterman was also quoted in the press release praising Aubert.

“Dawn has been a tireless advocate for our students, staff, and the entire LT community. On behalf of the LT administration, I thank Dawn and wish her family all the best in all future endeavors,” Waterman said.

When Swinehart resigned, the board received applications from 15 people to fill her seat on the school board and eventually chose Elvia Nava from LaGrange Park to fill the vacancy.
