A man was arrested in Berwyn May 20 after stealing a bicycle from an unlocked garage in Riverside.

Two officers were dispatched around 7:40 p.m. that evening to the intersection of Southcote Road and Selborne Road after reports came in of a man trying to go into backyards. According to police, a witness told one of the officers at the scene that he had seen the man in question enter a garage by foot on Selborne Road and ride off from the house on a bike. The witness gave police a description of the man. Someone on the corner of 26th Street and Harlem Avenue told police he saw a man matching that description heading east.

Police later found the man on the corner of Cermak Road and Ridgeland Avenue in Berwyn. An officer brought the witness who had seen the man enter a garage, who confirmed it was the same man. The man was arrested and taken to the police station.

Police contacted the owner of the bicycle, valued at about $480, who asked to sign a complaint. The owner said he had left the bicycle in his unlocked garage and provided police with door camera footage of the man looking through the owner’s house before he stole the bicycle.

The man was read his Miranda warning at about 8:50 p.m. and placed in a cell upon refusing to answer questions. Felony charges for the case were approved at about 2:45 a.m. the next morning. The man was later processed and released, with a May 28 court date set.

Arrested for driving with a suspended license and a warrant out

A woman was arrested May 18 in Riverside after an officer saw her driving without a seat belt.

According to police, an officer on patrol near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Harlem Avenue saw the woman driving while not wearing a seatbelt, so they maneuvered behind the woman’s car and pulled her over into a parking spot at the 7-Eleven at the intersection. When the officer asked her for her driver’s license and proof of insurance, the woman said she had neither. The officer ran her name and date of birth through the police database, which revealed she had a warrant out for her arrest out of DeKalb County, as well as a suspended driver’s license.

The officer arrested the woman around 7:30 p.m. that evening. Her car was left where it was, because it was legally parked, and the woman was taken to the police station, where she was given her citations and paperwork. A July 5 court date was set for her charges related to driving with a suspended license. The woman was released, as her DeKalb County warrant stated for her to not be held on it and a June 6 court date to be set.

Woman injured on late-night walk

Police were dispatched to a house on the 8800 block of Burlington Avenue around 10:10 p.m. May 20 on a report of battery, though no one was arrested.

According to police, a man had called to report that his girlfriend was assaulted while walking home alone from Irish Times. After arriving at the residence, an officer spoke with the woman, who said she had had several drinks with a friend at Irish Times before walking home alone. She said she had been walking east on Burlington Avenue, past the Irish Times parking lot, when an unknown man pushed her to the ground, injuring her right knee and left knuckles. The woman said she swung at the man while she was on the ground, causing him to flee. She was able to describe the man to police but could not describe what he was wearing.

Medics arrived on the scene to evaluate the woman, who signed a refusal of medical assistance.

Police noted in their report that the woman said she had drunk seven alcoholic beverages that night and displayed slurred speech while talking with officers. They also noted that she “changed the narrative of the incident” at some points.

Another officer reported that the woman told him she had been drinking with her friend at Phil’s Sports Bar & Grill rather than Irish Times.

The woman told police she only wanted the incident documented and would not sign a complaint. Police told her they would review Irish Times’ surveillance footage and reach out later.

In a supplementary police report from the next morning, police said an officer reviewed the surveillance footage. In it, the officer saw the woman leave Phil’s and walk east, past Irish Times. In the footage, the woman struggled with her balance. As she walked past Irish Times, the woman entered a blind spot for about nine seconds before reappearing in front of 8859 Burlington Avenue and crossing the street. In the footage, the woman continued walking east until reaching the bike rack for the Brookfield train station near Forest Avenue. As she continued walking east, about 20 yards from her residence, she could no longer be seen due to the lighting. Police noted that no one could been seen approaching the woman or walking away from the area where she had been seen in the footage.

These items were obtained from the Riverside Police Department reports dated May 18-20 and the Brookfield Police Department reports dated May 20-27; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.
