Brookfield police responded to a garage fire Feb. 5.
Around 1:13 a.m., an officer responded to the 3700 block of Cleveland Avenue to discover a garage “fully engulfed in flames” after a neighbor had called to report it. Police said the overhead power lines also began to catch fire.
The officer spoke with two individuals outside of the residence and confirmed everyone was out of the home. The residents said they woke up to their garage on fire with no idea of how it started and called 911 immediately.
The officer also spoke with residents of a neighboring house whose garage the fire began to spread to and advised them to exit and stay outside until the Brookfield Fire Department told them it was safe to go back inside.
Brookfield firefighters put the fire out and told police there was no evidence of foul play before cleaning up debris at the scene. ComEd representatives cut power to the downed lines.
The officer canvassed the alleyway running north and south and documented damage to structures. One garage along Cleveland Avenue and a Jeep Wrangler that had been inside it were both destroyed while the wood fence and garbage cans at the same address sustained fire damage. Two garages at adjacent homes on the street were also damaged. Paint and siding on three garages along Blanchan Avenue also appeared damaged to the officer.
The officer informed the homeowners of the damage sustained to their property while Brookfield firefighters told residents they could safely return to their homes.
These items were obtained from the Brookfield Police Department reports dated Feb. 3-10; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded.
