Brookfield police responded to a report of theft on Jan. 26, but no one was arrested.
Around 4:08 p.m., an officer spoke with the complainant, who had walked into the police station. She told police she had arrived home around 1:30 a.m. Sunday from work when she noticed the front door of her residence was open and unlocked, though she didn’t observe signs of forced entry. To get to her rental unit upstairs, the woman said she had to walk around to the stairs out back, at which point she noticed the backyard gate was also open.
The woman said she called her boyfriend, who was not home but lives with her in the apartment and who said he had not left the door open. At first, she found nothing disturbed or out of place within the apartment and no snowy or wet footprints from the snow outside. When she went to place some money from her work into her stash of savings, which she said no one else knows about, she found that all of the money, between $5,000 and $6,000, was missing, police said.
Later, the woman was packing for an upcoming trip to Mexico with her boyfriend when she noticed her passport was also missing from the handbag where she had kept it. Her wallet, also in the handbag, was undisturbed. The woman called her boyfriend to inform him of the missing money and passport, to which he said he didn’t touch either. He arrived at the home shortly after and, while continuing to pack, he noticed he was also missing his passport and a necklace.
The woman told police she waited to inform police after she spoke with her boyfriend, who said he would “handle the matter” and convinced her against reporting the open door, police said. The couple had to cancel their trip due to their stolen passports, the woman said. A police officer called the woman’s boyfriend and left him a voicemail.
On Jan. 27 around 4:15 p.m., an officer responded to the couple’s address and spoke to the resident of the first-floor unit, who said she was home on the night of the incident and didn’t see or hear anything suspicious, police said.
In a follow-up call, the woman confirmed she had left for work around 4 p.m. on Jan. 24 and that her boyfriend had been home when she left. She said she was unsure what time he later left the house. According to the police report, the investigation remains open.
