Brookfield police on Feb. 12 arrested a 27-year-old Berwyn man who had a warrant out for his arrest.

Around 10:32 a.m., an officer was on patrol near Eight Corners when they witnessed a car without a front license plate drive through the roundabout and turn south onto Maple Avenue, where the officer initiated a traffic stop on the 3600 block.

After the officer made contact with the driver, the man explained he had just returned from Michigan, where he had purchased the vehicle from a private buyer. The man provided a copy of the car title to confirm as much but said he did not have insurance on the vehicle due to the recency of the purchase.

After running the man’s information, the officer learned there was a warrant out for him from Cook County for a previous charge of reckless driving.

The officer asked the man to exit his car and arrested him without incident before transporting him to the Brookfield police station, where Brookfield police charged him with driving without valid registration. Police set a March 10 court date before transporting the man to the Berwyn Police Department, where police processed him on his warrant and held him for a bond hearing the next day.

Driving with expired plates

Brookfield police arrested a 38-year-old Brookfield man on Feb. 10 who was driving a vehicle with expired registration.

Around 1 p.m., an officer observed the man’s car heading east on Ogden Avenue with expired license plates.

After the officer pulled the man over at the intersection with Vernon Avenue, he said the vehicle was not registered to him and that he has a revoked driver’s license. He also could not provide proof of insurance for the vehicle.

The officer ran the man’s information and confirmed his license had been revoked in relation to a past DUI charge. The officer arrested the man and transported him to the police department, where he was charged for driving with expired registration, for driving on a revoked license and for driving an uninsured car with a March 10 court date.

Stolen vapes

Brookfield police responded to a report of a retail theft on Feb. 14, but no one was arrested.

Around 7:16 p.m., an officer responded to the Quick Mart at the Clark Gas Station at the corner of Maple Avenue and 31st Street in response to the report of three men who had entered the store and stolen vapes before fleeing on foot.

At the scene, an officer spoke with an employee, who said all three men had entered the store together, and one of them approached the counter to purchase a bottle of Gatorade and a packet of gummy bears. When the man noticed a container of vapes that were located over the counter, the man grabbed eight to 10 packs of them before all three men fled, police said.

Police observed video footage and took the Gatorade and gummies into evidence before contacting the gas station owner. No arrests were made.

These items were obtained from the Brookfield Police Department reports dated Feb. 9-16; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
