Brookfield police on May 11 ticketed a 39-year-old North Riverside man after they learned his car’s license plates had expired.
Around 11 a.m., an officer was driving behind a white car while on patrol and discovered the car’s license plates and registration had been suspended previously due to a lack of mandatory insurance. The officer pulled the car over at the intersection of Arthur and Garfield avenues and spoke to the driver, who provided a driver’s license but could not provide proof of insurance on the vehicle. The officer ran the man’s license and learned it had expired in 2024.
The officer told the man the car would need to be administratively towed, but the man said his passenger had a valid license and could take possession of the vehicle. The officer observed the passenger to have bloodshot eyes and thought he may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The passenger explained he had just woken up and agreed to take standardized field testing, which showed the officer he was not under the influence.
The officer issued citations to the driver for suspended registration, no insurance and no valid driver’s license and set a May 26 court date. The officer ensured the man and his passenger switched seats and let them go on their way.
Aggravated speeding
Brookfield police ticketed a 53-year-old LaGrange woman for speeding on May 5.
Around 12:10 a.m., an officer was performing stationary radar in the parking lot of Citibank off Ogden Avenue when they recorded a gray car traveling east at 59 mph in the 30-mph zone. The officer followed the car and pulled it over on the 8800 block of Ogden Avenue.
There, the officer made contact with the driver, who said she was late to pick her son up from elementary school. The woman provided the officer with her driver’s license and proof of insurance, and her information came back clear after the officer ran it through the police database.
The officer issued the woman one charge for aggravated speeding and set a June 9 court date before sending her on her way.
Traffic altercation
Brookfield police on May 4 responded to a report of a traffic altercation, but no one was arrested.
Around 9:20 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the intersection of Ogden and Prairie avenues on a report of the altercation in which one of the drivers may have punched the other driver’s vehicle. The officer arrived and found the cars at the intersection of Ogden and Rose avenues in Lyons with a Lyons officer.
After speaking with each driver, the officer learned that there was no collision, and the altercation began on the Ogden Avenue bridge, where both drivers said they were cut off and brake checked. One driver said the other driver got out of his vehicle to yell at him before punching his car but said there was no damage to the car. The other driver said he did confront the first driver but denied punching his car. The officer did not notice any redness on the second driver’s hands to indicate he may have punched the car, police said.
After both drivers were sent on their way, the first driver arrived at the police department and said he had located a dent above the driver’s side taillight that he alleged the other driver had caused. The man said he would want to pursue charges, and the officer said they would check village cameras to see if the footage corroborates that the second man caused the dent.
The officer reviewed footage that showed the second driver approaching the first man’s vehicle twice, but he “pulled away” both times before reaching it, police said. At no point in the footage did the second man punch the first man’s car, police said, though the footage did skip around at times. Police did not take further action.
