The Riverside-Brookfield Landmark was named the third best weekly in Illinois in the Illinois Press Association’s Best of the Press contest. Winners were announced June 4 at the annual event in East Peoria.
In the sweepstakes award which reflected all 11 of the Landmark’s honors, the Landmark placed third in the mid-circulation category.
The Landmark won top recognition in the government beat reporting category for Stella Brown’s coverage of an effort to bring a dispensary to Brookfield. Ongoing coverage of the Brookfield Shops was also recognized.
The Landmark was also recognized for features, business reporting, obituaries, overall page design, its website and for special sections. The annual Answer Book community guide placed first in the state.
The Forest Park Review, a sister paper, was named the state’s best small circulation weekly for the second year running.
Overall, the four NEWSWELL Chicago flags — Landmark, Review, Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest and the Austin Weekly News — won 44 editorial awards in the IPA contest.
Wednesday Journal also won top honors in the advertising and marketing contest. That brought us the Sam Zito Award of Excellence Trophy which basically dwarfs the Kramer trophy.
Max Reinsdorf, general manager of NEWSWELL Chicago, said the strong showing on both the editorial and advertising sections of the IPA contest reflected the hard work and talent of the staff. “We’re committed to creating strong, independent and always locally focused news for our communities. We have great people, rooted in these neighborhoods. It is gratifying to see that work appreciated at the state level,” he said.
