Brookfield police arrested a 29-year-old Westchester man on June 20 for driving drunk after his vehicle struck another car while it was parked.

Around 1:30 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 3600 block of Prairie Avenue on a report of a hit-and-run from a woman who said her parked car had been struck by a silver Dodge and pushed over the curb and into another parked car.

After officers canvassed the area, LaGrange Park police located the silver Dodge at the intersection of 31st Street and LaGrange Road. Brookfield officers responded to the intersection, where they saw the car in question had heavy damage to the front and was leaking “various fluids” onto the road. LaGrange Park police relayed the driver and sole occupant of the car was being medically evaluated by paramedics before sharing the man said he had been coming from Irish Times and that an open alcohol container was in plain view on the floor of the driver’s seat.

Paramedics documented the man’s refusal to go to the hospital before a Brookfield officer met with the man outside the ambulance, where they “immediately” smelled alcohol on his breath and noticed he slurred his words and struggled to maintain his balance. Upon being asked, the man said he did not have his driver’s license on him and that his car did not have insurance.

The man said he did not recall being in a crash and that his car had already had front-end damage. The man again said he was coming from Irish Times, where he said he had three beers. The man agreed to take field sobriety testing, during which he nearly fell over several times, police said.

Based on their observations, the officer arrested the man for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash. After signing his Miranda warning after being taken to the police station, the man agreed to answer questions from police. The man declined to submit to a chemical breath test.

Police charged the man with leaving the scene of the crash, failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane usage, having an expired registration, driving an uninsured car and driving under the influence of alcohol. Police set a July 14 court date and released the man to someone else’s care in the lobby of the lockup facility in Berwyn.

Arrested for battery

Brookfield police on June 19 arrested a 20-year-old Brookfield man for battery after LaGrange Park officers intervened when he attacked someone.

Around 1:30 a.m., an officer responded to the intersection of Rochester and East avenues, on the border between Brookfield and LaGrange Park, for a battery case that LaGrange Park police called in. Those officers told the Brookfield officer that they had observed the man attacking another person just inside Brookfield’s jurisdiction before they separated the two and handcuffed the man in the back of their squad car.

The officer spoke to the person who was under attack, who said the alleged assailant thought someone else, whose identity was redacted, was his own wife. The victim said he confronted the other man and told him he was not welcome in their home, at which point the other man attacked him while he was walking away. The man said he was punched several times, and officers observed facial injuries corroborating his recollection.

The officer then approached the alleged assailant in the back of the LaGrange Park squad car to place him under arrest. The officer transported the man to the lockup facility in Berwyn and read him his Miranda warning, which he signed. Police charged the man with one count of battery and set a court date for July 19.

These items were obtained from the Brookfield Police Department reports dated June 15-22; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
