By the time you read this column you will either celebrating Halloween early by dipping into the candy bag you bought a week ago or are rushing out to the store to get some goodies for goblins, because you know the closer you get to Halloween the lower the prices will be and that you’re not as fussy about what kind you pass out.

I will make my usual little bags full of stuff, which include that card for my dentist Dr. Salerno, for those who overdo it on the candy front. The reasoning behind making bags is I can tell you exactly how many trick-or-treaters come to the Kosey house each year.

While essentially Halloween has religious origins, it has over the years taken on a different meaning. As grown-ups we tend to remember when we were kids, our favorite costumes and the best houses to get treats.

However, I still like the fun of the day and will wear black as I greet the goblins. There have been a few times, as an adult, when I dressed up for Halloween. While teaching at Mater Christi School, I wore a nun’s habit and was instantly transformed into Sister Latilla the Nun.

To my dismay as I strode down the hall, with my ruler in hand, I could hear the little ones saying, “What is Mrs. Kosey supposed to be?”

The following year, I modified the outfit to become a witch and was easily more identifiable, which I did not take personally. I think one of my better party costumes was the one I pinned campaign buttons all over. I went as Election Day. Clever, huh?

Decorations adorn our house, but we go for “cute” rather than “scary.” There is enough that’s frightening out there, like the cost spent on political campaigns and the economy, so we have smiley ghosts and happy scarecrows.

Here’s a fun fact for thought. Did you know a full moon, which is often associated with Halloween decorations, will not occur on Halloween until the year 2020? I certainly hope the Cubs win a World Series before that!

October is an anniversary for me. As of this month, I have been with the Landmark for 11 years; who would have thought it!

As the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having a good time.” Thanks Dan and Bob and to my readers. I hope you have had as good a time reading this column as I have writing it. Here’s to more years of fun writing and reading.
