Fenwick      28
St. Laurence 27 (OT)
An extra-point with big implications sailed wide right during overtime on Friday night at St. Laurence, missing the uprights but giving the Fenwick football team a 28-27 victory over the host and at least a share of the Chicago Catholic League White Division title.
The Friars (6-2, 3-0), who are also bound for the state playoffs, now head to Toyota Park in Bridgeview on Friday to take on De La Salle for a White Division showdown. A victory would give Fenwick sole possession of the division title.
At St. Laurence, on the night of the Vikings’ Homecoming, the Friars scored in every quarter but the third. In the first half, running back Greg Killingworth (20 carries, 186 yards) rushed for touchdowns of 73 and 51 yards. But it was a 15-yard touchdown pass by Fenwick quarterback Joe Romano to Nico Krajecki on third down and 15 in overtime that eventually gave Fenwick the edge. St. Laurence (5-3, 2-2) scored on the next possession when Josh Hudor burrowed in from three yards out, but the extra-point to tie the score missed wide right and Fenwick was able to enjoy the fireworks after the game more than its opponent.
In the fourth, Romano hit Joe Musso for a 40-yard touchdown pass before the Vikings answered with an 85-yard touchdown drive to tie the score. Hodur finished with 144 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries.
“A win’s a win,” said Fenwick head coach Joe DiCanio. “I told the team that I think my mother pushed that extra-point wide right.”
DiCanio went on to say that this was one of the most bizarre football games he’s ever coached.
“We had possession of the ball just four minutes in the first half, and 13 minutes in four quarters,” he said. “We just couldn’t get anything going. We ran a total of 28 plays in the game.”
DiCanio said the Friars are looking forward to Friday night’s game at Toyota Park, which will also be Senior Night for Fenwick.
“We’re looking at that game not so much as winning sole possession of the White Division, but winning and getting a good seed for the playoffs and maybe even home-field advantage to start the postseason,” he said. “It’ll be a big night for us.”
Friday night’s game at Toyota Park is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. The game will be the first ever football contest held at the park, home to the Chicago Fire soccer team. Tickets, priced at $5-$10, are on sale now at the Toyota Park ticket office, at Fenwick and all Ticketmaster outlets, including ticketmaster.com.
