Riverside Brookfield track athlete Brenna Mossman won the 200-meter dash at the Downers Grove North Sectional on Friday. The freshman finished in 26.3 seconds to quality for her first Class AA State Meet this weekend.
Emily Swift tied for second in the pole vault with a vault of 8-feet-6-inches for RB, which finished fifth overall as a team.
Prior to the sectional, the Bulldogs finished second at the Metro Suburban Conference Meet with 94 points. Vija Lietuvninkas won the high jump event with a leap of 5-4, two inches higher than her personal best. The sophomore was a state qualifier in the event last season.
Mossman won three events at the conference meet. She jumped to first with a 16-7 leap in the long jump, placed first in the 100 dash in 12.7 seconds, and took first in the 200 in 26.9 seconds.
Freshman Brittany Kozlowski placed second in the mile in 6:02, a personal best.
Hitterman wins discus event
The Lyons Township boys track team finished third with 105 points at the West Suburban (Silver) Conference Meet held at Concordia University on Saturday.
LT’s Nick Hitterman won the discus event with a toss of 146-7.
Lions win sectional in third OT
The Lyons Township boys water polo team won its own sectional on Saturday in a thriller.
Peter Bruton’s game-winning goal with 12 seconds in the third overtime led to an 11-10 advantage over Brother Rice. The victory propelled the Lions to the IHSA State Tournament this weekend at Stevenson High School.
RB volleyball picks up two wins
The RB volleyball team won two matches at the Willowbrook Invitational on Saturday.
The Bulldogs defeated Eisenhower 25-15, 25-22, and Elgin 25-9, 18-25, 25-14.
In the Elgin match the Bulldogs were led by Billy Comrie’s 11 kills. Comrie also had six digs.
RB (10-18) finished sixth in the tournament.
Back to state for Friars
The Fenwick girls water polo team won its own sectional on Saturday with a 10-4 victory over St. Ignatius. Morgan Bonk led the Friars with six goals.
Fenwick, which finished runner-up at state last season, takes on Homewood-Flossmoor in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Campagna wins at No. 3 singles
Fenwick tennis player Dominic Campagna finished first at the Chicago Catholic League Championships on Friday.
Campagna won at No. 3 singles by defeating Matt Bevenour of Loyola 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Tyler Keifer and Ed Crane finished second at No. 1 doubles, as did Marty Mullen and Dave Elias at second doubles.
The Friars finished second overall with a score of 33.
Shannon, Touhy win at CCL Meet
Fenwick’s Ryan Shannon and Bill Touhy won long distance races at the Catholic League Championships on Saturday.
Shannon won the 800-meter run in 1:55.51, while Touhy timed out first in the 1600 in 4:46.6.
Fenwick finished eighth as a team with 35.3 points.
Former LT athlete named honorable mention
Lyons Township graduate Becky Bryzgalski was named honorable mention in the 2008 all-conference voting by the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) coaches.
Bryzgalski, a member of the Concordia University softball team, pitched 18 times this season for the Cougars with nine starts to her credit. The senior hurler compiled a 7-3 record with a 1.94 earned run average over 90 1/3 innings. Bryzgalski struck out 91 while walking 31, and she graduates Concordia with the program’s new career strikeout record of 361. In addition, she holds the single-season strikeout record of 106-set two years ago-and shares the career record of 24 wins with Kathy Van Ooteghem (1983-84).
Fenwick softball falls to JC
The Fenwick softball team suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Joliet Catholic last weekend.
The Friars (5-18, 2-15) lost 7-4 on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday.
Bridget Ellsworth went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Fenwick on Friday.
