After being outscored 57-6 in its first two games of the early season, the Fenwick football team finally unleashed its own offense on Saturday against St. Francis de Sales en route to a 41-6 romp at Bishop Noll High School.
“It was incredibly important we come out and prove that we do have a good team going into this game,” said Fenwick head coach Joe DiCanio. “After taking on opponents like Hubbard and Providence, this was a good confidence builder for us.”
St. Francis de Sales, who lost its two previous games by a combined score of 100-0, was no match for Fenwick. The Friars (1-2) capped off a 60-yard drive in the first quarter with running back Colin Tobin scampering in for a touchdown from 2 yards out. Tobin upped the lead to 14-0 with a 50-yard punt returned for a touchdown. Junior Joe Musso hauled in a 35-yard TD pass from Mike Androwich to close out the scoring in the first quarter.
In second quarter the Friars poured it on with Nick Falk’s 75-yard TD pass from Androwich and Greg Killingsworth’s 30-yard TD run. The Friars had a lofty 34-0 lead at the break.
“I like our enthusiasm. We’re starting to grow up a little bit, and that’s good when you have just three starters back from last season,” said DiCanio. “Now, we’ll get ready for Hales [Franciscan] and try and continue to push this thing forward.”
Both defensive starters Austin Brown and Nate Welch are expected back this week. The juniors suffered concussions in the loss to Providence on Sept. 1.
The Friars host Hales at Morton West on Saturday (1:30 p.m.).
LT lets lead slip away
If you asked Lyons Township coach Jack Derning if the Lions would be happy with a 14-0 lead in the early stages of the second quarter at Hinsdale Central in both teams’ conference opener, his answer would be an unequivocal “yes.”
That auspicious scenario is exactly what the visiting Lions (2-1, 0-1 West Suburban Silver) enjoyed in Hinsdale on Friday night before the Red Devils rallied with 26 unanswered points en route to a 26-14 West Suburban (Silver) Conference win against the Lions.
After an excellent LT kickoff return to midfield at the start of the game, the Lions found the end zone three plays later on a 15-yard run by Alex Sewall. With the Lions’ aggressive defense forcing three turnovers from Hinsdale Central quarterback John Whitelaw and holding the Red Devils’ offense in check, LT scored again with 8:01 remaining in the second quarter on a 1-yard TD plunge from senior quarterback Ed Viliunas to seize a 14-0 lead.
Trailing 14-7 at the intermission, Hinsdale Central (2-1, 1-0) found its offensive rhythm during the second half, particularly running back Billy Auriemma and Whitelaw. The potent running tandem collectively rushed for 203 yards on 30 carries. Whitelaw also completed 7-of-13 passes for 98 yards highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown strike to wideout Nick Chernier that put the Red Devils up 21-14.
The Lions host Oak Park (2-1, 1-0) Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
RB falls to Robeson
Off to a sluggish 0-3 start, the Bulldogs will turn their attention to Metro Suburban Conference competition starting with a 7 p.m. game at Elmwood Park (2-1) on Friday.
After lopsided losses to Metamora in their season opener and rival Nazareth two weeks ago, RB endured a hat trick of the worst kind with a humbling 50-14 home loss against Robeson on Friday night.
The Bulldogs actually started the non-conference clash in efficient fashion on the opening kickoff when Dontaye Bosley picked up a Raiders fumble and ran it in from 23 yards out to stake an early 7-0 lead.
However, the Raiders responded with 36 unanswered points to take a commanding 36-7 lead at the intermission. Speedster Brandon Green sparked the Robeson attack with 222 all-purpose yards.
RB sophomore reserved quarterback Billy VandeMerkt (8-for-16, 77 yards passing) provided the Bulldogs’ other score of the evening on a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Starter Lucas Hackel completed 11-of-29 passes for 71 yards.
