Archbishop Robert G. Casey

A former pastor at Brookfield’s St. Barbara Parish is now the head of an archdiocese.

Archbishop Robert G. Casey, 57, who served as a pastor at St. Barbara from 2009 to 2016, was appointed head of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati on Wednesday, Feb. 12, though he has not yet been installed in the position.

Since 2020, Casey has served as vicar general of the Archdiocese of Chicago, making him the deputy to Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, the head of the Chicago diocese. Since 2018, Casey has served as an auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese.

In a written statement, Cupich praised Casey’s work in Chicago.

“He has helped guide our archdiocese through a period of reorganization and renewal and prepared it for a blessed future,” Cupich said. “We know he will carry this experience and his pastoral heart to his new post as Archbishop of Cincinnati and we wish him well as he continues his service to the People of God.”

In 2016, Casey was appointed pastor of Chicago’s St. Bede the Venerable Parish in the Ashburn community area. In 2018, in addition to being named auxiliary bishop, Casey was also named vicar of Vicariate III, a subregion of the archdiocese with parishes in the West, Southwest and South sides of Chicago.

Casey, who was born in Evergreen Park and grew up in Alsip, was ordained in 1994. He was appointed associate director of Casa Jesus, a house of discernment for Latino men interested in the priesthood, in 1998 and became its director the next year.

In 2003, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Tepeyac Parish in Little Village, where, in 2008, he cofounded Taller de José, which connects people in need to health, legal and social services.
