A male pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metra train in Brookfield at the Prairie Avenue railroad crossing on Friday, July 25.

Martha Hill, a Metra spokesperson, confirmed the fatality but could not provide more information about the man. She said Metra train #1276, which was running express to Union Station in downtown Chicago according to the Chicago Tribune, struck the man at 5:36 p.m. that day.

At 5:56 p.m., Brookfield officials said on social media the train crossing was closed due to the collision. At 9:20 p.m., the post was updated to say the crossing had been cleared and reopened to the public.

Records from the Cook County medical examiner’s office show the victim was a 41-year-old Black man, but they did not list the municipality where he lived. The records say he died from accidental blunt force injuries at 5:46 p.m.

This is the second pedestrian who was killed in a Metra train collision in Brookfield this year. A 75-year-old white, male Brookfield resident died in a purported suicide after he was struck by a train at the Maple Avenue railroad crossing on April 23, according to medical examiner records. Brookfield police did not release the man’s name.
