A Brookfield man who reported to police that he had been held up at knifepoint on the afternoon of Oct. 9 in the 9400 block of Garfield Avenue has been charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report, although the charges could have been more severe had the man’s employer wished to pursue the case.

According to the police report, Brookfield police responded to the 9400 block of Garfield Avenue around 3:20 p.m. in response to a report of an armed robbery. When they arrived, the alleged victim, a food service truck driver later identified as Christopher L. Stotler, 27, reportedly told police that a man approached him from behind, brandished a knife and ran off with a large amount of cash he had been carrying.

However, police reported that Stotler appeared “very nervous” and “gave statements which did not corroborate witness statements.”

After talking with Stotler further, police reportedly obtained his consent to search his home in the 3200 block of Grand Boulevard. There police reported recovering two bank bags from inside a dryer in a basement crawl space. In all, police said they recovered just over $11,000.

Stotler’s employer, apparently, satisfied to have the money recovered, did not pursue other criminal charges against Stotler. Brookfield police charged him with disorderly conduct for filing the false report.

Bail violation

A former Riverside resident previously charged with disorderly conduct was picked up by Riverside police and charged with violating his bail bond after he allegedly attempted to contact a woman who had lodged a complaint against him in August.

According to police, Nicholas J. Klee, 19, had been charged with disorderly conduct in August after he reportedly tried to enter a woman’s East Avenue apartment. After that incident Klee reportedly moved to Arkansas, but was back in town last week for a court appearance.

On Oct. 12 at 4:53 a.m., the same woman reported that she was awakened by her barking dog and looked out her apartment door window to see Klee running away from her apartment. One of Klee’s bail conditions, according to police, was that he have no contact with the victim.

At 3 p.m. that same day, police observed a vehicle with Arkansas plates parked in the apartment building parking lot. Shortly afterward, Klee was taken into custody while driving the vehicle in downtown Riverside. Klee was also arrested in August for allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old girl inside the pedestrian tunnel beneath the railroad tracks in downtown Riverside.

Burglary

A resident of the 4100 block of Vernon Avenue, Brookfield, reported to police that between 3 and 6 p.m. on Oct. 9, someone entered the unlocked service door of the home’s detached garage and then entered the unlocked 2000 Pontiac Grand Am parked inside and removed a Sony AM/FM/CD stereo from the dash. The offender also opened the trunk and removed a tool box containing several hand tools, and a CD case containing 20 CDs. The loss was valued in excess of $500.

DUI

Brookfield police charged Brookfield resident Sherwood A. Brown III, 48, with driving under the influence after a traffic stop just after 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 9. According to the report, an officer clocked Brown driving 47 mph in a 25 mph zone in the 3400 block of Kemman Avenue. During the stop, the officer reported that Brown appeared intoxicated and had Brown perform field sobriety tests, which he reportedly failed. He refused to submit to a breath test. In addition to DUI, he was cited for speeding and have an expired vehicle registration.

Possession of hypodermic syringes

Riverside police charged Romeoville resident Luis A. Salgado with possession of hypodermic syringes and needles during a traffic stop on Oct. 13 at 11:21 p.m.

According to the report, an off-duty Riverside officer called in to report a possible impaired driver near the intersection of Ogden and Harlem avenues. Police stopped a black Chevy Blazer at Miller Road and Ogden Avenue, and reported seeing the driver put something under the seat of the car. Those items turned out to be syringes and needles, police said.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside and Brookfield police departments from Oct. 9 through Oct. 14 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
