Riverside-Brookfield wrestling

 

Riverside-Brookfield’s six sectional qualifiers all finished fifth in their respective weight classes at Saturday’s Class 2A Rich East Sectional. Nick Guirini (113), Joe Sandora (132), Antonio Ochoa (138), Vinny Zaccagnini (152), Nick Brusaw (195) and Louis Grigoletti (285) earned the aforementioned top five showings for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, who claimed their first regional championship since 2008, had eight wrestlers overall compete at Rich East.

In team competition, RB takes on Chicago Public League champion Bowen at Bremen Feb. 19 (6 p.m.) in the Sweet 16 round of dual team matches of the state playoffs.

 

Lyons Township gymnastics

 

Kelsy Kurfirst led the Lions to another state meet qualification by winning three of four events and taking the all-around title in the Hinsdale Central Sectional last week. Kurfirst took first in the uneven parallel bars (9.70), floor (9.525) and all-around (38.350), while finishing second in the vault and balance beam. The Lions’ Michelle Cozza, Maren Craig and Katie Carling also qualified for state. LT won the sectional with 149.250 points, followed by the sectional host Red Devils (140.900).

Lyons Township girls basketball

The Lions, who are seeded sixth in the River Forest Sectional, open the state playoffs this week at the St. Ignatius Regional. If the Lions made it through the regional semifinals victory (Tuesday, Feb. 12, after deadline), the Lions advance to Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. regional championship game against most likely Fenwick.

Riverside-Brookfield boys swimming

The Bulldogs will compete in the Fenwick Sectional on Saturday (1 p.m.). RB closed out the regular season with the varsity team claiming third place and the junior varsity taking top honors at the Independent Conference Meet in early February.
