What can the Lyons Township boys water polo team possibly do for an encore?

Last season the Lions recorded an historic campaign culminated with 34 wins and a state championship.

For considerable measure, LT also personally dethroned eight-time defending state champ Fenwick via an 8-7 win in the York Sectional final.

“A lot of people worked very hard over a long period of time to accomplish our goal winning a state championship,” LT coach Doug Eichstaedt said. “I think our returning guys, especially our seniors, are excited about trying to defend the [state] title.”

A stellar senior class led by co-captains Joe Shannon and Sean McMahon along with Peter Dore, Josh Hirt and Chris Sekula has the Lions poised for another state title run.

Shannon, who scored six goals in the state championship game, led LT with 130 goals and 32 assists last season. Hirt (76 goals, 55 assists), Dore (71 goals, 56 assists) and McMahon (23 goals, 18 assists) also return as major offensive threats. Sekula is an excellent goalie, who tallied 394 saves in 36 games last spring.

Michael Dow, George Duffy, Nathan Kriha, Jack Patel, Tommy Kaptur among others provide LT depth and versatility.

LT cruised in its opener last week with a 22-2 win over Hinsdale South.
