The Lyons Township High School boys track team won its sectional meet Saturday with 196 points and qualified several athletes for the Class 3A IHSA state finals this weekend.

Individual event winners for LTHS included Matthew Harris in the long jump (23 feet, 3.75 inches) and 110 high hurdles (14.78 seconds); Tom Bryson in the pole vault (12-0); Nick Demes in the shot put (54-6) and discus (145-01); Ed McCarter in the 800 meters (1:58.63); Antwan Swan in the 400 (51.16) and Lino Mogorovic in the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.01).

The Lions’ Alex Lima (800/1:59.35), Jimmy Rhode (400/51.28), Michael Matusiak (3200/9:32.32) and Jimmy Mitchell (shot put/53-03) also qualified for state.

LTHS took top honors and qualified for state in all four relay races.

Meanwhile, fresh off the momentum of their remarkable upset of Glenbard South to claim the Metro Suburban Conference title, Riverside-Brookfield High School finished second at the LTHS sectional meet with 87 points.

The Bulldogs’ 800 relay (Matt Chapp, Mike McCabe, Andrew Bell, Marvin McKenzie) ran a time of 1:31.36 and the 1,600 relay (Chapp, Bell, Lewis Rogers, Gerrand Moody) clocked in at 3:28.04 as both teams qualified for state.

David Swon won the triple jump (43-06) and took second in the long jump (22-0) to become a two-event state qualifier. Rogers (40.71) earned second place and state qualification in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Lyons Township girls track and field

Sophomore Emma Haugen finished second in the high jump (8 feet, 5 inches) and 11th in the triple jump (36-7.75) at the IHSA state finals to lead LTHS to a six-way tie for 31st place with eight points.

Freshman Hannah Dutler ran a time of 11:48.41 to finish 36th in the 3,200 meters.

Riverside-Brookfield boys volleyball

The Bulldogs celebrated Senior Night by cruising to a 25-12, 25-14 victory over Fenton in Metro Suburban Conference action.

Seniors Mike Kosik, Tim Thor-Larsen, Mitch Malloy, Scott LeBeau, Paul Kraus, Matthias Wittman, Jake Fieseler and Jack Gibson all played well for RBHS, which finished the regular season with a 24-11 record.

RBHS also rallied for a 21-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory against Hinsdale South. Malloy’s school-record 10 blocks and Fieseler’s 11 digs fueled a stellar defensive showing, while Thor-Larsen (eight kills) and Gibson (seven kills) powered the offense.

Riverside-Brookfield girls soccer

The Bulldogs lost 2-0 to St. Francis in the championship game of the Solorio Academy sectional on Friday.

RBHS, which finished 8-12 overall but 5-1 in the Metro Suburban Conference, routed Solorio 8-0 in the regional semifinals.
