New exhibit opens at RAC
Riverside Arts Center, 32 E. Quincy St., welcomes the community to its newest exhibit, “Line,” featuring the work of artists Diana Gabriel and Azadeh Gholizadeh in the Freeark Gallery from Jan. 12 through Feb. 22.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Gabriel has exhibited in Chicago and nationally. Her work borrows aspects of artisan traditions like weaving, knitting and macramé and recreates moments from her childhood, taking part in a conversation that emanates from countless generations of women artisans.
Gholizadeh’s work adapts the forms and scenes recovered from memories of landscape, exploring the fragility of home and creating a new language of longing to rediscover the meaning of landscape.
Meanwhile, in the FlexSpace Gallery, RAC presents “Energy, Frequency and Vibration” featuring the “life-trembling line” drawings of Andrei Rabodzeenko through Feb. 22.
An opening reception will be held for both shows on Sunday, Jan. 12 from 3 to 6 p.m.
Free. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Expert helps jumpstart your genealogy
Start off the New Year by diving into your family tree at “Beginning Genealogy” presented by Matt Rutherford in the Public Meeting Room of the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
Rutherford is curator of genealogy and local history at the Newberry Library and has spoken extensively on a variety of genealogy topics, including using repositories and archives, researching pre-fire Chicago, adoption searches and census schedules. He’s the co-author of the 2005 book “A Bibliography of African American History at the Newberry Library.”

Lions collecting Christmas lights
The Riverside Township Lions Club is collecting unwanted Christmas lights for recycling.
Working and non-working lights that are for indoor or outdoor use can be dropped off at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, or the North Riverside Public Library, 2401 Desplaines Ave., during normal business hours through Jan. 15.
Lights will be processed, sorted by component and recycled back into useful products. Proceeds benefit Lions Clubs International.
