James “Jim” Nephin Moxon, 85, of Waverly, Georgia, died on July 6, 2026, in St. Augustine, Florida. Born in Oak Park on April 4, 1941 to parents James Arthur Moxon MD, and Cecelia Nephin Moxon, he was the third of four children. He spent his childhood in the suburbs of Chicago. Growing up, he was an active hunter, fisher, boatsman, marksman, and all-around outdoorsman. He would teach his own children and grandchildren the same appreciation for these things he so deeply valued.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 and spent nearly two years on active-duty service overseas in Germany and the South of France, operating a military ambulance, and he was known to bend the rules (and maybe remove a governor or two) to get his patients quickly where they needed to be. Returning stateside to the suburbs of Chicago he spent eight years as a night foreman for Chicago Steel and Thompson Wire Mill. In 1963, he met Patricia Lee Perna and the two were wed in 1964. In September of 1972, he relocated with his family to St. Augustine, Florida where he and his wife owned and managed separate businesses, along with varied rental properties.
After they separated, he returned to the Chicago area, where he would reside for another five years. During those years, he was able to help care for his mother until her death in 1988. He purchased farmland in Prairie Garden, Illinois, land that he cultivated himself. Desiring to reside closer to his adult children, Jim returned to the South, purchasing property on the Little Satilla River in Waverly, Georgia. It was there he would spend the next several decades with his longtime paramour, Caroline Galati. During these years, they built a wonderful life, filled with boating, fishing, storytelling, golfing, antique shopping, old-time movie watching and working hard around their home. They also loved to travel near and far to spend time with family and loved ones.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Christine Moxon Chapman and son-in-law Steve Chapman; his son, James Michael Moxon (Mimi); his grandchildren, Alyssa Moxon, Michael Moxon, and Aubrielle Moxon; his sister, June A. Maze; his brother, Dr. Arthur N. Moxon; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. James A. Moxon, his sister Mary Jane Ford, and his longtime partner, Caroline Galati.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Craig Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Tunnel2Towers (t2t.org) or Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org).
