Lawrence A. “Larry” Hitzman, 81, of Tinley Park, formerly of Brookfield, died peacefully on July 31, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on Nov. 4, 1944, he was a proud U.S. Army veteran and dedicated much of his working life to his craft as a butcher, a profession he genuinely enjoyed and took great pride in. Over the years, he became a familiar face to countless customers at County Fair Foods on Western Avenue in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood before concluding his career at Casey’s Market in Western Springs.
He had a kind heart, a gentle spirit, and a genuine interest in the world around him. An avid reader whose curiosity never faded, he found great joy in learning throughout his life. He especially loved history, with a particular passion for the Civil War. He also enjoyed gardening and had a deep appreciation for nature.
A devoted Chicago Cubs fan, he and Christine also enjoyed attending performances as season ticket holders to the Southwest Suburban Symphony. During retirement, they spent several happy years living in Branson, Missouri, where Larry embraced the slower pace of life and the natural beauty of the Ozarks before eventually returning to Illinois.
A devoted and active member of St. George Parish in Tinley Park, he found strength, comfort, and purpose in his faith.
He treasured the people in his life. His greatest joy was his family, and he was a steady source of love, wisdom, and encouragement.
Larry was the husband of Christine (née Scalise) Hitzman and the father of Michelle Hitzman. After the heartbreaking loss of his first wife, Patricia A. Hitzman (née Meschi), to leukemia in 1973, he devoted himself to raising Michelle as a single father — a role that became one of his life’s greatest accomplishments.
He was the brother of Mary “Cookie” (the late John) Shuper, the late Frederick (Cynthia) Hitzman, and Thomas (Alice) Hitzman; the uncle to Ryan Hitzman, Paige (Chris Aarvig) Hitzman, John (Rebecca) Shuper, and Tracy (Bruce) Collier. He will be deeply missed by his faithful dog, Jingles.
Visitation was held on Aug. 10 at Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Aug. 11 at St. George Church in Tinley Park, followed by entombment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
