Brookfield police arrested a 39-year-old Chicago man on Oct. 14 for driving under the influence.
Around 11 p.m., officers were on patrol on the 9400 block of Ogden Avenue when they noticed a westbound silver Ford without headlights or taillights. As the officers moved their squad car behind the Ford, they observed it weaving within its lane before pulling it over on the 9600 block of Ogden.
The officer made contact with the driver and sole occupant, who apologized for not having his lights on. The officer smelled alcohol on the man’s breath, noticed he was slurring his words and saw he had watery, bloodshot eyes. When asked for his driver’s license and proof of insurance, the man provided a temporary driver’s license and his state ID before providing a license. He said he had proof of insurance on his phone, which was dead, and said he was trying to get home.
While one officer ran the man’s information through LEADS, the other officer said the man appeared to be falling asleep and had failed to provide proof of insurance. When asked, the man said he was coming from a family member’s home on the South Side and that he was returning to his home on the North Side. The man said he had drunk alcohol about five hours prior to driving and agreed to take field sobriety tests. After exiting his vehicle, the man staggered to the rear and placed his hands on the trunk without being asked to do so, police said.
Police noticed multiple indicators of impairment during the tests, and the man declined to take a preliminary breath test. Police placed the man under arrest, had his car towed and charged him for driving without headlights, driving under the influence of alcohol and operating an uninsured vehicle.
Speeding on 31st
Brookfield police ticketed a 34-year-old Berwyn man for speeding on Oct. 16.
Around 11 p.m., an officer was on patrol on the 8800 block of 31st Street when they observed an eastbound vehicle moving at a speed of 50 mph in the posted 30-mph zone. The officer caught up to the car and initiated a traffic stop near Golfview and First avenues.
The officer made contact with the driver, who advised that his license was suspended or revoked. An inquiry through LEADS found that the man’s license was both suspended and expired.
The officer issued citations to the man for driving with a suspended license, driving with an expired license and speeding 20 mph over the speed limit. The officer agreed to let a driver with a valid license come retrieve the car to avoid having it towed at the driver’s suggestion. The officer released the man on pretrial conditions with a court date of Nov. 10 and sent him on his way with the valid driver who arrived.
Speeding on Ogden
On Oct. 17, Brookfield police ticketed a 35-year-old Chicago woman for speeding.
Around 7:15 p.m., an officer was monitoring traffic on the 9000 block of Ogden Avenue when they observed a silver Chevy heading west at a rate of 42 mph in the posted 30 mph zone. The officer conducted a traffic stop near Maple Avenue.
The officer approached the driver and explained the reason for the stop. The driver provided her driver’s license and proof of insurance, but after running the woman’s information, the officer learned her license had been suspended “for financial reasons,” police said.
The officer issued citations to the woman for speeding 11-14 mph above the limit and driving on a suspended license. They set a Nov. 10 court date and sent the woman on her way on pretrial conditions.

The officer contacted the driver and explained the reason for the stop. The man provided his driver’s license and proof of insurance, at which point the officer learned the man’s license had been suspended due to having outstanding unpaid court fees.
The officer issued citations to the man for failing to use his turn signal and driving on a suspended license. The officer set a Nov. 24 court date and released the man on pretrial conditions. The man walked away from his legally parked car and left the scene on foot.
