It’s the start of November in an even-numbered year, so you know what that means: The midterm election is coming up fast.
Early voting began widely in Cook County on Oct. 19, with six early voting locations opening on Oct. 7. It runs through today, Monday, Nov. 2, the day before Election Day. There are 56 early voting locations throughout suburban Cook County, including Brookfield Village Hall at 8820 Brookfield Ave. A full list is available on the website of the Cook County Clerk’s Office.
In Brookfield, voters will be asked to weigh in on a limiting tax rate referendum question that could generate $2 million to sustain the village’s 25-year road maintenance program without raising its portion of the tax bill. Officials on Monday, Oct. 26, passed a resolution committing the funding that would be generated from the referendum to the stated purpose.
Brookfield and Riverside fall into Illinois’ fourth congressional district, which is represented by outgoing Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García. The four candidates running for his seat are Democrat Patty Garcia, the former chief of staff for Rep. García (no relation); Republican Lupe Castillo; independent Chris Getty, the mayor of Lyons; and Working Class Party candidate Ed Hershey.
The four candidates gathered at a debate on Oct. 20 in Berwyn, in which major contenders Getty and Garcia lobbed accusations of corruption back and forth. Getty was recently accused of silencing dissent against the local government in Lyons after three people were denied entry to his meet and greet campaign event in Brookfield on Oct. 6.
Your ballot will include candidates running for federal seats like senator and representative, state seats like governor, attorney general, secretary of state and state representative and county seats like the county board president, the county clerk and the county sheriff.
