Can you believe October is around the corner? With yesterday’s autumnal equinox, summer has officially given way to fall. I’ll miss the hot, bright sun and beach days, but the crunch of leaves beneath my feet will make up for it in time.
This week was a doozy in terms of emergent news – you may have noticed if you kept up with our news alert emails. Last Wednesday, I reported the case of a juvenile who was struck by a school bus in Riverside. On Thursday, I pulled double reporting duty for the stories of a week-old dolphin calf who died at the Brookfield Zoo and RB’s response to false claims from a popular X account about buttons depicting controversial slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk circulating among students. (There were just two students involved and one button, RB officials said.)
And in the first part of this week, I’ve covered Riverside officials’ opposition to proposed improvements to traffic on Harlem Avenue that could cut off access to the village’s businesses, Brookfield’s communications plan regarding its upcoming streets referendum in November, and the kayak rental company outfitting Riversiders to traverse the Des Plaines River.

A week-old bottlenose dolphin calf has died at Brookfield Zoo Chicago. The calf was born on Wednesday, Sept. 9, to Allison, a 20-year-old dolphin. The calf died Wednesday, Sept. 16, after “rapidly declining” early that morning.
