Despite the predictably unpredictable weather of early spring, the Riverside Brookfield softball team is clearly not concerned with saving wins for a rainy day. On the contrary, the Bulldogs have stormed out of the gate winning eight of their first 10 games and looking for more … victories that is weather permitting.

“The weather hurts a lot when you’re psyched up to play, and then you don’t,” Riverside Brookfield coach Dan Hull said. “All teams have to deal with [inclement weather], but it’s hard to control those emotions of getting up and down for games.”

Mother Nature cooperated at least a couple of days last week for the opportunistic Bulldogs, who cashed in a pair of victories by routing Immaculate Conception 14-4 on April 7 and knocking off Hinsdale Central 3-1 on April 9.

The Bulldogs put on an offensive show against IC, cranking out 18 hits during the five-inning affair. April Hutchens (4-for-4, 3 RBIs, 3 runs) and Lindsay Hayes (3-for-5, home run, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) found their groove at the plate. Morgan Vogel (2-for-4, 2 runs), Fallon Ryan (2-for-2, RBI) and Samantha Pozzie (2-for-2, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) also kept RB’s merry-go-round offense flowing.

Hayes (4-1) earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out four in three innings of work. Emma Forsberg threw well in relief by fanning three batters.

“The [IC] game was a very nice win for us,” Hayes said. “We need to keep our intensity level up against every team we play this season.”

RB struck early against Hinsdale Central as well, scoring two runs in the first inning.

Ryan (3-for-3, 2 RBIs) and Vogel produced a single and triple, respectively, to drive in two runs for the host Bulldogs. After the Red Devils scored an unearned run in the third, Hayes added an insurance run for RB when she smashed a triple that scored Hutchens.

Vogel (4 innings pitched, 4 strikeouts, 2 hits) collected her first win of the season, while Jaimie Duffek added two hits.

“We were pretty pumped up [for Hinsdale Central],” Ryan said. “Our lineup is really good this year. We gained valuable experience last season and we all get along, which really helps.”

In addition to their obvious chemistry, the Bulldogs possess pitching depth (Hayes, Forsberg, Vogel, and Hutchens), a prolific offense, and selfless players up and down their roster.

“This is a good group of talented kids,” Hull said. “Most importantly, they work together well. There isn’t one selfish kid on the team.”

RB faces Elmwood Park in a key three-game conference series this week before visiting Trinity (Saturday, 11 a.m.)

“Elmwood Park is playing very well,” added Hull. “We are going to have our hands full with them.”
