Saturday may have been a mildly cloudy day with mere sprinkles of rain, but the Riverside Brookfield softball team created a deluge of hits and runs, including four homers to handily defeat Trinity 11-5 and 18-4 (5 innings) in a doubleheader at Triton College.
“The kids just responded. They were crushing the ball,” said RB head coach Dan Hull, whose team also went 2-1 in a three-game conference series earlier in the week against Elmwood Park that included a 15-0 shutout in the pivotal third game.
In the opener of the doubleheader against Trinity, RB’s offense exploded with five runs in the top of the second. Morgan Vogel blasted a two-run homer and April Hutchens’ triple scored two more. Vogel, who just moved up from the junior varsity last week, also had a two-run homer in the shutout against Elmwood Park.
“It’s so exciting,” said Vogel of her promotion. “The competitiveness is outstanding.”
The Bulldogs added four more runs in the fourth to go up 9-0 on the Blazers. Trinity scored four in the bottom of the fourth, but could only add one more run in the fifth. Meanwhile, RB pitcher Lindsay Hayes (5-2) helped secure the win with a double, a home run and four RBIs.
Hayes commented on the home run, “It was a great smash. I needed to help my team and stay focused and keep battling throughout the whole game.”
Junior Rachel Buccieri went 2-for-4, which included a home run in the fifth inning.
The first inning of the second game left the Blazers shaking their heads in disbelief as the Bulldogs scored eight runs. A combination of timely hits, two walks and some wild pitches kept the RB players crossing over home plate. Senior Alison Durec doubled in two runs and went 3-for-4 with six RBIs in the romp.
Trinity scored all of its runs in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs added three runs in the second and then six more in the third, including Hayes’ second home run of the day.
Centerfielder Jaime Duffek had a great game for RB, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBIs.
“I’ve always been a contact hitter. I usually hit it to someone then have to hurry to get to the base,” she laughed. “It felt good today.”
Emma Forsberg was the winning pitcher of Game 2. She finished with five strikeouts.
RB hosts a doubleheader with Argo on Saturday. The Bulldogs start a crucial three-game conference match-up with Fenton on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
