The Michelin Guide, the gold standard of restaurant guides throughout the world, has for the second year in a row named Xni-Pec de Yucatan in Brookfield to its 2013 Bib Gourmand list, which recognizes “inspectors’ favorites for good value,” according to the Michelin website.
The Bib Gourmand list is not quite the same as getting a star from the Michelin guide, but Xni-Pec for the second year can count itself among a list of just 56 Chicago restaurants recognized as high-quality, good-value eateries. Other restaurants on the Bib Gourmand list include Frontera Grill, Girl and the Goat, Avec, The Publican and The Pump Room.
“It’s a great thing for us,” said Javier Contreras, co-owner of Xni-Pec, which opened at 3755 Grand Blvd. in January 2010. “From here to California, you can’t get anything similar to us. It’s a different type of taste of Mexico.”
The cuisine at Xni-Pec features the flavors of the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico. Dishes are distinctive in their use of such spices as cinnamon and allspice.
Contreras credits Michelin’s notice to their family recipes.
“The food has a hint of family,” he said. “That has a lot to do with it.”
