Maia Nelson, a seventh-grader at L.J. Hauser Junior High School in Riverside, received an honorable mention award in the One Earth Young Filmmakers Contest.
Her 8-minute film, “Drowning in Plastic,” focuses on plastic straws but also talks about plastics in general by interviewing local environmental leaders. Pledging to “skip the straw” is one of her suggested solutions for the plastic crisis, in addition to reusable shopping bags and water bottles.
Maia received an award certificate on March 2 at a ceremony at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. All honorable mention films will screen on April 27 at the River Forest Public Library.
