Brookfield police responded to four instances of broken rear passenger-side car windows consistent with attempts to steal a vehicle or steal items from a vehicle on Oct. 5.

Around 5:30 a.m., an officer responded to a residence on Elm Avenue on a report of an attempted motor vehicle theft. The officer spoke to the owner of the car, who had last observed it on Oct. 2 without damage before noticing the rear passenger window was broken on the morning of Oct. 5 with glass inside and outside of the vehicle. The owner also observed the steering column had been disassembled.

Later, around 6 a.m., an officer was driving south on Elm Avenue when they noticed a different vehicle with a shattered rear passenger window and a disassembled steering column. The officer inspected the vehicle and observed damage consistent with an attempt to steal the car. While the officer was investigating, the owner noticed them outside and came out, where the officer informed him of the damage.

The man said his car had previously been targeted in a separate incident with similar damage. He said he had last seen his car without damage the day before on Oct. 4 around 9 p.m. and that he did not hear anything unusual overnight or in the early morning.

Then, around 11:30 a.m., an officer responded to Morton Avenue on a report of a theft from a vehicle. The owner of the car told the officer he had discovered the broken rear passenger window around 11 a.m. and that a bag of tools valued between $300 and $500 had been taken from the truck.

Finally, around 3 p.m., an officer responded to Maple Avenue on a report of criminal trespass to a vehicle. The officer spoke with the complainant, who said her car had plastic covering a broken window that she had discovered ripped open with her steering column taken apart. She said nothing had been taken from inside the car.

Ticketed for speeding

Around 10:40 p.m., an officer was on patrol when they observed a red Nissan heading east on the 8800 block of 31st Street at 61 mph in the posted 30-mph zone using the squad car radar.

The officer positioned their vehicle behind the Nissan and used their emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. The officer made contact with the driver and sole occupant, who acknowledged he was speeding. The man provided a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

The officer cited the man for speeding between 26-34 mph over the speed limit and sent him on his way with an Oct. 27 court date.

Cited for aggravated speeding

Brookfield police on Oct. 12 cited a 20-year-old Berwyn woman for aggravated speeding.

Around 11:10 p.m., an officer was on patrol on the 9400 block of Ogden Avenue when their squad car radar recorded an eastbound vehicle approaching Eberly Avenue at a rate of 56 mph. After the vehicle crossed Eberly, the officer tried to catch up to initiate a traffic stop, during which time the car sped up to a maximum speed of 63 mph in the 30-mph zone.

The officer pulled the car over and made contact with the driver, who said she was speeding in order to get home. The officer issued a citation for aggravated speeding and set a Nov. 10 court date.
