Brookfield police arrested a 43-year-old Bensenville man for driving drunk and leaving the scene of an accident on Oct. 20.

Around 3:40 p.m., an officer responded to the 4200 block of Elm Avenue to a report of a hit and run accident that had occurred in the Mr. Submarine parking lot at 9016 47th St. A complainant told police a black Nissan had struck his parked, unoccupied car before the driver of the Nissan tried to drive away. The man said he tried to speak with the driver, who fled the scene, so the complainant followed him in his own vehicle and called police when he saw the Nissan swerving. He said he was able to stop the Nissan on the 4200 block of Elm Avenue by pulling in front of it.

The officer found both vehicles in the roadway with front-end damage, with the Nissan in park, its engine running and the driver in his seat. The driver acknowledged he had struck the other man’s car and said he would pay cash for the damages. The officer smelled an alcoholic odor coming from the car and noticed the driver was “sweating heavily.” The man said he was coming from work but could not state exactly where. When the officer told him to make sure the car was in park and exit the vehicle, the man initially shifted into first gear to begin to drive away, but ultimately followed the officer’s instructions after they were reiterated.

The officer observed that the man struggled to pull his driver’s license from his wallet even though he had been touching it during their interaction, and the smell of alcohol seemed to be coming from the man’s breath. The man told the officer he had only had one beer, police said, but the officer observed three empty BuzzBallz cocktail containers and two empty beer containers inside the vehicle. With the help of a Spanish-speaking officer, police conducted field sobriety tests on the man, who struggled to follow the instructions.

Police arrested the man for driving under the influence and searched his person, finding two more empty Fireball whisky shooters in his pockets. Police took the man to the Brookfield Police Department, where he declined to provide a chemical breath sample. Police charged the man for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident before releasing him on pretrial conditions ahead of a Nov. 10 court date.

Speeding on a revoked license

Brookfield police ticketed a 38-year-old Westmont woman on Oct. 22 for speeding and driving on a revoked license.

Around 7 p.m., an officer was on patrol on the 3200 block of Grand Boulevard when they observed a vehicle heading northwest at a speed of 36 mph in the posted 25-mph zone. After the vehicle passed the officer’s squad car, the officer initiated a traffic stop with their emergency lights.

The officer made contact with the driver and explained the reason for the stop. At the officer’s request, the driver provided proof of insurance but said she did not have her driver’s license on her person. She told the officer her license number, and the officer ran it to learn the woman’s license had been revoked.

The officer cited the woman for speeding 11-14 mph above the speed limit and driving on a revoked license. They set a Nov. 10 court date, provided the woman with copies of her citations and sent her on her way after telling her to park the car legally on the 3200 block.

Speeding 34 mph above the limit

Brookfield police on Oct. 24 ticketed a 31-year-old Palatine woman for speeding.

While on patrol around 1:30 a.m., an officer using in-squad car radar observed a silver Honda heading east on the 9100 block of Ogden at a speed of 64 mph in the posted 30-mph zone. The officer moved their squad car behind the Honda and conducted a traffic stop using their emergency lights.

The officer spoke with the driver and sole occupant and explained the reason for the stop. The woman told the officer she knew she was going at least 60 mph when asked about her speed, police said. The woman provided a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance at the officer’s request.

The officer charged the woman with speeding 26-34 mph above the speed limit, provided a copy of her citation, and sent her on her way with a Nov. 24 court date.
