A detour around a one-mile stretch of First Avenue is planned for later this month when the thoroughfare closes for railroad repairs.
The stretch of First Avenue from Cermak Road to Roosevelt Road will be closed from 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, through 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, weather permitting, according to press releases from the North Riverside village government and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The planned detour will take northbound drivers east to Des Plaines Avenue via Cermak Road before they return to First Avenue via westbound Roosevelt Road. Southbound drivers will take the detour in the opposite direction, heading west on Roosevelt, south on Des Plaines and back east on Cermak.
The street closure will facilitate repairs by IDOT and the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad to the “deteriorated crossing” just north of Cermak Road, according to North Riverside.
Both agencies advise drivers to plan ahead, expect time delays in navigating the detour and drive carefully for the safety of construction workers and their equipment.
