The following information was obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside and Brookfield police departments from March 14 through March 20 and represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
A pair of traffic altercations, one in Riverside and one in Brookfield, last week resulted in two arrests.
The first occurred on March 18 just after 8 a.m. at First Avenue between Forest Avenue and 26th Street in Riverside.
According to the report, a motorist called Riverside police to report a “road rage” incident in which two men were allegedly trying to run each other off the road, and nearly causing several accidents.
While both cars were stopped at a stop light, both drivers exited their vehicles and yelled at each other before continuing the erratic driving northbound along First Avenue. Riverside police caught up with one of the motorists, later identified as Mark Z. Malczyk, 21, of Justice, at First Avenue and the Eisenhower Expressway.
A witness reportedly identified Malczyk as the driver who allegedly was the more aggressive offender, and Riverside police charged him with improper lane usage, drag racing, reckless driving and improper parking on a roadway.
The other driver involved in the incident was not charged by police.
Then on March 19, Brookfield police arrested a man for aggravated assault after he allegedly threatened another man with a length of pipe following a traffic dispute.
Brookfield police received several 911 calls just before noon of a man being threatened with a pipe in the 9000 block of Monroe Avenue. When police arrived, the officer reported observing LaGrange Park resident Edward R. Viliunas standing at the rear entrance of 9037 Monroe Ave. holding a 34-inch length of pipe.
The victim, a 44-year-old Brookfield man, told police that he and two other people were walking home from the Osco Drug store at Park and Broadway avenues when Viliunas, who was allegedly driving his vehicle the wrong way eastbound attempted to turn the wrong way down Park Avenue. The victim told police he stepped in front of the vehicle and refused to move, prompting an argument between him and Viliunas.
Viliunas reportedly then backed up onto Broadway avenue and into a parking lot behind the business at 9037 Monroe Ave., while the victim chased after him to continue to argument. Viliunas reportedly went into the business and returned carrying a length of pipe.
Battery/mob action
? Brookfield police charged two teenage girls with battery and mob action after they allegedly beat another 18 year old outside of Riverside-Brookfield High School just before 10:30 p.m. on March 19.
According to the report, North Riverside resident Tracy S. Angio, 18, and Brookfield resident Megan E. Siegel, 18, pushed and beat the victim, who was later transported by paramedics to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn for treatment of a large bruise to the back of the head.
The attack was allegedly prompted by a run-in the victim had with Angio’s younger brother. The boy called his sister, who reportedly was driven along with Siegel, to the school where they found the victim and attacked her.
Siegel denied being at the scene. Angio allegedly said both were present, but that they just pushed the girl into some bushes and left.
DUI
? Chicago resident Lawrence Smith, 33, was charged with driving under the influence by Riverside police after a traffic stop at just after 7 p.m. on March 16. Police received a call of a car stalled in a southbound lane on First Avenue near Waubansee Road, and arrived to find Smith standing outside his vehicle with his car keys in hand.
During the conversation the officer observed a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech. Smith reportedly admitted drinking, but refused field sobriety tests. After his arrest at the station, a breath test revealed a blood-alcohol level of .20, over twice the legal limit.
He was also charged with driving on a suspended license (from a prior DUI), no proof of insurance and improper parking on a roadway.
? Brookfield police charged William G. Davis, 25, with driving under the influence after an officer reported at 4:47 a.m. on March 19 that Davis drove his vehicle through a stop sign at Maple Avenue and the Memorial Circle, traveled eastbound on Washington Avenue to Park, where he made a left turn without signaling.
After refusing to perform field sobriety tests, Davis was arrested and a search of his vehicle turned up two open beer cans on the passenger side floorboards. He also refused to submit to a breath test.
In addition to DUI, Davis was charged with a variety of traffic offenses. He was also found to have a warrant for his arrest from Brookfield for battery and on a warrant out of DuPage County for fishing without a license.
Theft
? A workman reported on March 16, that someone during the overnight hours had stolen a 30-foot length of copper gutter (valued at $500) and broke 10 slate roof tiles (valued at $100) at the Brookfield Historical Society, 8820 Brookfield Ave.
